A Clarification
In the current issue of Gutter (22) we stated that we have four previously unpublished Nan Shepherd poems.
The poems were originally discovered in 2016 by a librarian at the Scottish Poetry Library (SPL) and were verified to be previously unpublished work. We believed that still to be the case to this day. They were published by Gutter only after extensive consultation with the SPL and Nan Shepherd’s Literary Executor.
It has come to our attention today that these poems were previously published in Wild Geese (Galileo, 2018). We had no knowledge of this title, or indeed any reason to believe that the poems had previously been published in print, having done what we thought was extensive due diligence prior to publication and gaining explicit permission from the Nan Shepherd estate.
Needless to say, we are embarrassed that this situation has arisen, and though we are naturally disappointed to have been misinformed regarding the status of the poems, suffice to say we offer an unreserved apology to Galileo and editor Charlotte Peacock for any upset caused as a result of claiming the work had made its debut in the pages of Gutter.
