Gutter seeks a distribution agent to increase our brand recognition and retail presence.
Gutter magazine has grown significantly since we struck out on our own in 2017. Published twice yearly, we are the go-to publication for new writing in Scotland and we would like our distribution to reflect that.
We are investing in a designated distribution role because we think that having the magazine physically available in bookshops across the country will help us to build brand recognition, increase sales, and garner more submissions. This will enable us to more accurately reflect the writing being done the length and breadth of Scotland as well as introducing Gutter to an international audience.
In addition, recent years have been challenging for independent booksellers and we are keen to connect with and support that community.
The Distribution Role involves the following core tasks:
● Liaising with bookshops–primarily across Scotland, but also UK wide/internationally–to secure orders for the magazine. This will include each current issue as it launches, but may also include back issues.
● Managing ongoing relationships with bookshops.
● Establishing and running a system of orders and invoices to trade, fulfilling orders, collecting payment, and delivering the magazine both by post and in person as necessary.
● Email communication with the editors to agree timelines, publication dates, and print runs in line with demand.
● Attending occasional editorial meetings to discuss broader production of the magazine, future themes and features, markets to target etc.
As Gutter is a Glasgow based magazine, we will need you to be able to collect books for distribution. The ideal candidate will therefore preferably be based in Central Scotland.
What we hope you will take from it:
The role is proposed as a freelance opportunity with an estimated four days per issue paid at £80 per day, with additional travel expenses to be discussed with candidates at interview. This is a flexible role which can easily be managed alongside other commitments.
