Gutter #25 Launch: Audio Recording
On 10th March, we had the pleasure of launching Issue '#25. The event was hosted by editor Shehzar Doja, co-hosted by Issue #25’s guest reader April Hill, and featured writers Maya Uppal, Deborah Chu, and Ayla Douglas. The writers have generously given us permission to share recordings of their readings - listen below!
Maya Uppal
Maya Uppal is a poet and small rodent enthusiast. Their work has appeared previously in MUCK, HOME and SPAM press. For the launch, she read five poems: ‘Self Portrait Written in Fiction’; ‘O Chaos, I Am In Love Again’; ‘Paraben Free’; ‘The Confession of Nina Saleh, Deceased, in St James Cemetery’; and ‘Dolly the Sheep’.
Deborah Chu
Deborah Chu is an Edinburgh-based writer. She’s previously won the Allen Wright Award and the Scottish Book Trust’s New Writers Award. Her reading was an excerpt from her story, ‘some unsolicited advice for surviving the acqua alta’.
April Hill: Guest Reader Selections
April Hill, a.k.a. Lady Red Ego, is a Chinese/British lesbian writer concerned with intimacies. Her first pamphlet, The Red Ego, was published in 2019 with Wild Pressed Books and her second pamphlet, Natural Sugars, was published in 2020 by Broken Sleep Books. She was Gutter’s guest reader for issue #25, and read one of her favourite poems from the issue: Barbara A Morton’s ‘abstraction’.
Ayla Douglas
Ayla Douglas has written in No Parties and Product magazines. In 2021 she was a finalist in GWL’s writing showcase. Here, she reads an excerpt from her story, ‘Bird Island’.
